Building Community
Conference
The conference is about bringing together pioneers, professionals and laypersons in various community building areas. These participants wish to be involved with the development and implementation of a working model that demonstrates a living environment displaying harmony between people and planet in all facets of living. The event is designed to create interactive environments where pioneers, professionals and people in general have the opportunity to become involved in the process. Current management philosophy in cutting-edge leadership technology is to get everyone involved in the process. It creates ownership, which promotes care and concern for the outcome of the plan, whatever it is. Simultaneous with the conference, there will be a vendor area featuring products and services already on the market for public use. Now there is an opportunity for everyone to contribute and everyone gains or wins in the process.
This conference will bring skilled facilitators, both youth and adult, together to share what it takes to organize and empower groups to work together. Teams are the essence of 'getting the job done' in today's world. In any environment, it takes a group of people to accomplish a goal. Each workshop will demonstrate this process by utilizing many pioneers in the specific fields of choice, together with facilitators for each group within the workshop focus. The morning sessions will explore critical areas in depth, gathering information and insight. The afternoon sessions will focus on development and implementation of action plans that meet the needs determined by the morning sessions. These areas are focused around humanitarian outcomes that are necessary for any healthy community and include ergonomics to spirituality to future galactic society foci so that no area is left bereft.
We are planning to have pre-event virtual conferences involving interactive processes with groups around the world as a demonstration of just how we CAN create. This IS an effective and efficient process of collaborative alliances involved in the information flow and implementation of collective decision-making. We are one planet, one people, one life... There are many sources of information on building community. Some are more pertinent to particular aspects of building community than others. These sources cover the majority of areas regarding community. An overview of a model community's features offers some insight. There are other, more defined areas of understanding that still only scratch the surface of the information that is available. In order to make this study more practical, like putting it to practice, we are engaging others to join in a collective effort to organize an event to explore what CAN be done NOW.
According to the Drucker Foundation, the global community of the future will be, at its best, a series of communities that are interdependent and diverse, embracing differences, releasing energy and building cohesion. The broader global community will be enhanced by the health of the many smaller communities that constitute the whole. Those living within each community define all community.
In the new era of community, it will take the cooperation of corporate as well as civic organization. The corporate buy-in comes from the need for new products and services and their marketing, manufacturing and distribution. The partnering for profit motivation is still very much alive and realistically will not subside for some time. The win/win is created from the corporate cash and in-kind (hard or soft resources) necessary for the development and implementation of this project prototype and the benefit of the affect on the P&L statement from the manufacturing and distribution rights of the technologies developed as a result. The civic organizations win/win comes from the sharing of resources and increasing the coverage area of their divergent services. Corporate giving has decreased dramatically due to the 'same service' competitiveness within the nonprofit sector. Ultimately, we (the inclusive community) benefit from the cooperation rather than competition.

Looking beyond the present and its known capacities requires new mind-sets, new eyes and ears... yours. For too long the individual has been allowed to feel separated, apart from the whole. In a world where the individual now has access to information and the ability to apply it immediately it is even more important, even imperative, that you would be involved. The fact that you are reading this now is proof. Individuals can craft or forge a stronger sense of civil society, community and ONEness, eliminating the barriers often associated with groups, organizations, corporations and the like. Ask yourself this, "If I'm not going to be involved in the planning of my own future, then how will I know it is what I want it to be?"
What research and trend analysis seem to be showing is the need for accountability and responsibility in regard to the whole population, where goods and services and designed with care and concern for the many, rather than the few. The new global village is changing the paradigm from partnering for profit to facilitating philanthropy. Intergenerational philanthropy is now affecting social entrepreneurialism. Trillions of dollars will be funneled into philanthropic endeavors in the next ten years.
Nearly every person will be affected by these changes, either directly or indirectly, and those at the front of the movement will have the most profound influence. Information flow in the past has mainly come from a top - down perspective. Now, the individual influence on change is precipitating a major shift in this pattern, literally turning it upside down. Many are realizing just how powerful grass-roots organizations can be as the trend continues toward massive economic, political and social change - benefiting the many instead of the few.
MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE!
The initial conceptual construction and 'webbery' was done by Zen Benefiel, who continues to spearhead the development. There will be many, individuals and organizations, who contribute in the actual organizing. It is our desire to create a win/win event including nonprofits and educational institutions in many phases of the program. Nonprofits will benefit from donations and exposure; educational institutions will benefit through internship programs and individuals will benefit from financial and personal growth. As a collective effort and with respect to corporate donors or outright sponsorships, each organization that garners funds will be compensated directly back to their organization. Individual fundraisers will have the same opportunity with regard to their efforts in soliciting sponsorships, whether in-kind, cash or services. In order to build a sustainable community for the future, we must all work together as a collaborative team, sharing responsibility and rewards.
As a commitment to shifting paradigms, the schedule of tasks, from advertising to booking facilitators and keynote speakers to technology integration will be posted on this site soon. Organizational structure is shifting from an hierarchy to a "jobarchy," where the job is the boss and each person is responsible to supply their skill sets in their main area of expertise. Their particular area of expertise and the time spent is critical, yet there are other tasks that we will all help complete. The point is jobs are key, without them nothing would get done. Each person will also be assigned tasks that may be menial, yet they still have to be done, such as emailing, updating databases, changing diapers, whether figuratively or literally, etc. The majority of your time, however, will be spent doing what you love. Applied passion has no substitute.
Areas of focus are broken down into categories where each person has the opportunity to participate at whatever level they choose, from fundraising to volunteering for daily conference needs. Garnering sponsorship or outright gifts will have its benefits, too. Depending on the amounts received, benefits will include registration, travel costs, lodging costs, donations to your favorite charity or commissions direct to you.
GET INVOLVED NOW!
Tentatively the conference is scheduled for September, 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona. We are scheduling this time as a tribute to the catastrophic event of last September. It is our desire to show that we have the ability to continue to develop better understanding of the needs of our global family for our sustainable future. Together we CAN change the current state of fear that has proliferated the consciousness of humanity and begin to share the leadership necessary to take us into the new millennium with care and concern for each other and our planet.
Depending on interest, we also hope to have an outdoor festival from Friday through Sunday to include arts, crafts, educational materials and representation of organizations serving local and global areas of concern regarding public and social service opportunities. This will allow others not able to attend the conference to become informed and active in the support of this endeavor. Due to cost, space and time constraints we will be limiting the participation to 25 people in each of the 14 areas of focus.
Continued efforts will continue as integrated teams develop their areas of focus and expertise. Our plans are to chronicle these continued developments, discoveries and delivery of collaborative plans for implementing solutions to existing problems. Mission: Earth Dance, both in E-zine and magazine, will keep our developing global community network abreast of cutting-edge discoveries and practical solutions resolving many of our collective community issues to date.
